BAHO Projects and Activities
Holistic community development integrating cultural preservation, climate action, and sustainable livelihoods across the Africa Great Lakes Region
1 Cultural Heritage Preservation
BAHO preserves cultural heritage through a holistic approach integrating living traditions, indigenous knowledge systems, natural heritage, and material culture. We support transmission of languages, rituals, music, dance, storytelling, and traditional governance systems.
We safeguard indigenous ecological and medicinal knowledge connected to forests, wildlife, sacred sites, and natural landscapes, including traditional healing systems and medicinal plant knowledge.
2 Climate Action & Conservation
BAHO promotes climate action through tree planting, ecosystem restoration, and community-led conservation initiatives rooted in indigenous environmental stewardship. We protect natural resources and strengthen local climate resilience while restoring degraded ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity.
3 Community Empowerment
BAHO empowers communities through capacity-building in handcraft skills development, value addition, and entrepreneurship. Through the BAHO Art Gallery Centre, we improve market access for community-produced crafts, support fair trade, and strengthen livelihoods for economic resilience.
4 BAHO Art Gallery Centre
The BAHO Art Gallery Centre, located in Kisoro Town, serves as a vibrant space for showcasing community-made crafts, cultural artifacts, and heritage items that reflect the rich traditions of the Africa Great Lakes Region.
The Centre enhances market access for local artisans, particularly women and indigenous communities, by connecting their handcrafted products to the wider public, tourists, researchers, partners, donors, and volunteers. Beyond trade, the gallery functions as a cultural learning hub, offering visitors meaningful insight into local history, creativity, and indigenous knowledge systems.
Through the Art Gallery Centre, BAHO promotes sustainable livelihoods, cultural pride, and inclusive economic opportunities, while ensuring that communities remain the primary custodians and beneficiaries of their heritage.
5 Eco-Cultural Tourism
BAHO develops responsible eco-cultural tourism initiatives that celebrate heritage, conserve natural landscapes, and promote authentic experiences. These community-owned initiatives create sustainable economic opportunities while reinforcing cultural pride and environmental protection.
6 Batwa Empowerment
BAHO supports the Batwa Indigenous community—original inhabitants of Mgahinga and Bwindi National Parks—through inclusive empowerment initiatives. This includes skills development, cultural preservation, tourism training, and livelihood support, strengthening dignity, resilience, and self-reliance.
